So, I have been traveling back and forth between the UK and Hamburg for many years, 7 to be precise. I have now moved to Germany and I am living in Hamburg. I like hamburg, a lot of trees and you can count more bridges here than you can in Venice. Another reason I like Hamburg is because it is easy to find stuff. In Germany and I guess most European countries, it costs money to dump your unwanted stuff.
‘Stuff’ can include anything from tables and chairs to pots and pans, all of varying quality. I found a lovely retro candle stick a few months ago too. Now don’t get me wrong I don’t go round picking everything up, all though my girlfriend would have you believe different. I do pick up things that I know I can either use or renovate.
Well the other day I came across a real gem. It would have been passed by in the street by most, but a few of us (my Dad especially) would have been after it. It was a pallet! A beautiful bit (huge) shiny (relatively) new wooden pallet. Now this was no ordinary pallet, oh no! This pallet was about 8ft long and about 5ft wide. The wood separating the top and bottom was also good. Instead of being the small square blocks it was thick (5 inch by 4 inch) quality wood.
Now people I could not let this go to waste. This is what I built in the attic of my relatively new dwellings in Hamburg…
The next stage of this little project is to set up some kind of mini macro studio to the left of the window. I would like to try and get more time-lapses done.
The wood is great, thick and strong, will last for ages. I may or may not paint it it. If I do it will be painted in a matte white colour. The light will be reflected of the white, as you can see it is pretty dark and I have not got my flashes yet…
You can also see a mirror in this photo, only just mind you. It is on the wall directly in front of the window. This adds a huge amount of extra light into the space.
So, if you want some junk to turn into something useful, go somewhere else Hamburg is mine!!!
PS how could I forget, I recycled the nails too!!!
